Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence An Interview with Delta Kits Founder Walter Deines

In 1984, Walter Deines and his wife Darlene started Delta Kits and ran it out of their windshield repair and replacement shop in Springfield, Oregon. In the ensuing years the company’s production capabilities and product offerings expanded far beyond its original scope. Today, Delta Kits is a premier distributor and manufacturer of innovative products, and the choice of professional technicians worldwide. Son, Brent Deines was hired as sales manager in 1994 and advanced to the position of company president in 2002 upon the announcement of Walt and Darlene’s retirement.

As Delta Kits’ 30th anniversary comes to a close, we caught up with Walt and asked him to share some of his thoughts on Delta Kits then and now as the company looks to the future.

DKI: Why did you decide to go into the Windshield Repair business?

WD: Two friends from Missoula, Montana had migrated to Eugene, Oregon, and had become involved in a franchise for Windshield Repair. I joined them and found that I really enjoyed windshield repair, especially the challenge of doing better repairs than anyone else through innovative techniques and hard work, and by developing simpler, easy to use equipment.

DKI: What do you see/hope for the future of Delta Kits?

WD: I never really thought much about the future of Delta Kits but focused on making a living doing something I enjoyed and that would benefit our customers. After Brent joined us and quickly proved to be our successor in the operation and management of Delta Kits, Darlene and I have remained confident that Delta Kits would always be as successful as Brent’s leadership and those who work with him want to make it.

DKI: How has the industry changed?

WD: I am not qualified to answer this question because I have not followed the changes that have occurred in the industry since leaving the company in 1998. I do believe that there is one thing that has not changed; the value of customer service.

The value of customer service is and always will be one of the primary factors that set Delta Kits above and apart from the competition. Of course, it is paramount that a company builds and maintains a customer base to service, that will support the essential costs of providing any kind of service. The value of customer service is and always will be one of the primary factors that set Delta Kits above and apart from the competition. Of course, it is paramount that a company builds and maintains a customer base to service, that will support the essential costs of providing any kind of service. I think most people with business experience (including all employees) realize that there are two basic kinds of service. Good and bad. The initial cost of providing all kinds of customer service is about the same but the end result is what makes the difference. Delta Kits was founded on providing not just good service, or better service, but the best possible service, which translates into superior service. This can only be provided by superior employees through superior management.

Darlene and I believe that Delta Kits is a superior company and that all who work for Delta Kits are superior people who must have the same goal as the company. Anything less would not provide the quality of service that customers deserve and pay for.

Happy 30th Anniversary to Delta Kits and its’ superior crew, we are proud to have touched your lives and thank God for what you have done for thousands of people all over the world who use your products.
