If you haven’t checked out the new Delta Kits website yet I would encourage you to do so. We have been receiving rave reviews about the new design, improved functionality, and new features. One new feature that is a work in progress is the new Ask an Expert page.
We created the Ask an Expert page in response to customer requests for quick access to frequently asked questions and are updating it with new data weekly. However, unlike previous Delta Kits Q&A pages users can now receive quick email responses to their specific questions. Questions are answered privately by one of our four expert windshield repair and headlight restoration technicians, then posted to the website for the benefit of anyone who may have similar questions. Questions and answers posted on the website may be modified and of course, names and email addresses are kept completely confidential.
Here are a few examples of recent questions we have received:
Question:
Is Infinity headlight restoration coating the same as a clear coat?
Answer:
Infinity 4.1 is formulated specifically to replace the OEM protective coating applied to new headlights and unlike traditional clear coats, products dry very quickly with no yellowing. Infinity 4.1 is a low VOC water-based coating that seals and protects headlight lenses for an extended period of time. For superior durability, ease of application by hand or spray, ultra-fast dry time, and long-lasting protection, nothing beats Infinity 4.1.
Question:
What is the size and grit of each sanding disc used to restore headlights using the Delta Kits professional headlight restoration system?
Answer:
For most vehicles, Delta Kits recommends the following 3” sanding discs: 320, 500, 800, 1200, and 1500. After sanding the headlight it is polished with a 3000 grit polishing disc. If the damage is very severe or if the factory coating is excessively difficult to remove it may be necessary to use a 180 grit disc prior to the 320 discs.
Question:
What types of glass can scratches be removed from using Delta Kits polishing compound?
Answer:
Delta Kits Cerium Oxide and polishing head can be used effectively to remove light scratches from windshields, mirrors, residential plate glass windows, and other non-tempered glass. In some cases, cerium oxide may also be used to remove scratches from hardened or tempered glass but it is much more difficult and therefore not recommended. The polishing head features a dense, wool-felt wheel mounted to an aluminum adapter plate. The wheel is 1″ x 3″ with a 5/8” arbor and 1/4″ shank adapter so it can be attached to a high-quality polisher or variable speed electric drill. Delta Kits cerium oxide is a very high-grade extra fine abrasive used by glass and mirror manufacturers for edge and surface polishing.
Be sure to request scratch polishing instructions if this is your first time using these products.
Note: Tempered or heat hardened glass is typically used in automotive side glass and back glass or commercial applications.
Question:
Is it necessary to “prime” a surface chip with a thin resin prior to using Premium Pit or Premium Pit Plus resin to polish?
Answer:
A satisfactory repair to a surface chip can be made using only Premium Pit Plus Resin and Premium Pit Polish however we do recommend coating the surface of a surface pit with a low viscosity fill resin such as MagniBond Resin. It is not necessary as a primer but a low viscosity resin will wick into the scratches to improve the appearance of the finished repair. It is also not necessary to polish with a pit polishing cork but doing so may also improve the appearance of the finished repair.
